United Nations veteran Brazilian police Colonel Lima Castro, Public Information Officer –PIO of the Rio de Janeiro State Police/Gendarmerie (Polícia Militar do Estado do Rio de Janeiro – PMERJ), is conducting an excellent job on providing the media and the population with information regarding the once called “War against traffic” in one of the city´s main slums, Complexo do Alemão.
The entire favela (with over 3 km square and includes in its complex other 13 small slums), located in a hill, is totally surrounded and sealed off by a first-time joint operation with federal and state forces in a public security scenario, that includes the 2 Rio de Janeiro police forces, the Army, Marines and Air Forces, federal police, firefighters, highway patrol.
According to Colonel Lima Castro (police peacekeeper in Mozambique and Deputy-Police Commissioner in East-Timor), one of the closest officers of the PMERJ Commanding Officer (Colonel Mário Sérgio Duarte), deadline for surrender of probably 500 hundreds criminals who are hiding themselves in the favela is due at sunset.
So far, around 30 criminals have being arrested, including 2 heads of organized crime, but daylight is going down.
“We suggest them to surrender to the police and their fundamental and human rights will be fully respected!” – said Col Lima Castro.
“We are ready to take over…. just waiting for the final order!”
If they do not obey the police order, special police forces, such as the BOPE (Special Operation Unit of the PMERJ) and others, will take over of the Complexo do Alemão!
Brazilian local media is emphasizing that for the first time, Rio de Janeiro population is supporting the police actions in what they call of being their “libertação”.
Honor and Strength for all the brave police and military personnel.
