President of the UN Security Council, Ruhakana Rugunda said the UN Mission in Timor-Leste has been the most successful UN Mission compared with those in other countries.

Lusa [Portuguese News Agency] reported that the UN Security Council will discuss security issues in Timor-Leste and it will also look at the UN Mission in the country.

The UN Security Council will discuss the report from the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT), to be submitted on the 15th of this month

Lusa stated that on October 19, the UN Security Council will discuss progress in Timor-Leste.

The UN Security Council Meeting will specifically discuss the security responsibility from UNMIT to the Timorese National Police (PNTL).

The resumption of PNTL responsibility for districts will gradually be handed over.

“The UN in charge of the security sectors in Timor-Leste because of politics and the military crises in 2006,” read the Lusa statement.

The resumption of responsibility from UNPOL to PNTL is based on PNTL preparation in each district, and the UN perspectives that they will leave Timor-Leste in 2012 in a step by step process.

  1. I am pleased returning to Timor Leste after 12 years and see “in loco” many developments this country has reached so far.
